About

Jill Fraley July 2021 - Black - Gray.png

I was born and raised in Eastern Kentucky where my family has lived for many generations and where I grew up roaming strip mines and my family’s farms.

I hold a B.A. from Yale University in history, a J.D. from Duke University, an LL.M. from Yale Law School and a J.S.D. from Yale Law School. I have received the American Association of Law Schools’ Scholarly Paper Prize and two Fulbright Scholar Awards.

As a scholar I write about issues of legal history that impact our ecosystems.

I worked as a litigator on cases involving toxins and defective products. I continue to consult and serve as an expert witness on cases involving property and environmental law.

I teach at Washington and Lee University School of Law and, more generally, operate a website for law students and write textbooks aimed at making law school an equitable experience for people from all backgrounds and socio-economic statuses.

In between teaching, I travel extensively as a photographer, documenting conservation, sustainability, and socio-economic issues. I work with NGOs to create images that tell the stories we all need to hear.
